Two New Club Exhibitions – on now, until early spring 2025

As an ongoing project, Gabriola Photography Club curates the art display space downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Clinic on Church Street, Gabriola Island. Club members take turns having solo exhibitions or taking part in group exhibitions.

The coming of the new year turns out to be a busy time for Gabriola Photography Club! Eight or our members are displaying their work in two separate print exhibitions here on Gabriola Island.

Downstairs at the Medical Centre on Church Street, a new exhibit hosts a variety of prints – both colour and monochrome – by club members Linda Blokhuisen, Sally Bullas, John Konovsky, Laurie MacBride and Joan Owen. The show is on now and will run until February 20, Mondays through Fridays during daytime hours.

Meanwhile, over on North Road, patients of Gabriola Chiropractic will be in for a visual feast, with 32 prints on display from January 1 until March 31 during business hours. Seven club members are involved, including Linda, Sally, Laurie and Joan, along with Sher Falls, Corinne Flaws and Steve Struthers.

While our club continues to show our work downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Centre, this month you’ll find a new exhibit by one of our members upstairs as well.

“Adventures in Photography” is a new show by Corinne Flaws, a visual artist and photographer who specializes in landscape, wildlife and abstract imagery.

Corinne has always had a passion for nature and for capturing its beauty. It inspires her to share what she sees, through her photographs and her other art. As well as producing beautiful photographs, she enjoys capturing images with her camera to use as inspiration for her paintings.

Corinne moved from Winnipeg to Gabriola Island in 2020. This show includes a collection of her favourite images captured right here on Gabriola and on Vancouver Island, as well as from Manitoba and her travels in Utah and Oregon, and the Shetland Isles.

The exhibit will be on display upstairs at the Medical Centre until January 10, 2025.

November 24: Fall Show Time!

Gabriola Photography Club’s Fall Show & Sale will take place this year on Sunday, November 24. It’s our annual opportunity to share our work with the rest of the Gabriola Island community – and a great antidote to the dark days of late fall!

This fun, free event takes place from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at the Rollo Centre (685 North Road, in the Village, across from the school).

In addition to all the gorgeous prints, greeting cards and photographic gifts that you’ll find there, the Show is a good opportunity to meet some of the folks involved in the Gabriola Photography Club and learn more about our group, which welcomes new members.

November 5 Photo Walkabout: Old City Quarter

We’ll be heading to Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter for our next Photo Walkabout.

Meet on Tuesday, November 5 at 8:30am at the Gabriola ferry terminal, to take the 8:45am sailing to Nanaimo as a walk-on passenger.

From the Nanaimo side, we’ll pass by the Port Theatre in downtown Nanaimo and head up to the Old City Quarter. This photographically rich area was originally the economic heart of the city, and is nowadays a favourite shopping destination, housing an eclectic mix of independent shops and businesses, revitalized heritage buildings and newer development.

Photo opportunities should be diverse, as the area includes plenty of interesting buildings, architectural details and graffiti. Street photography and panning moving subjects should also be possibilities – in short, anything that catches your eye.

As we move along we’ll establish some specific meeting points so the group can stay together. There will be an option to meet for lunch afterwards at either Gina’s Mexican or The Vault Cafe.

CHANGE OF DATE for Coats Marsh walk – now Oct. 23

Because of the very wet weather expected over the next several days, our October Photo Walkabout to Coats Marsh Regional Park has been postponed.

The new date is Wed. October 23.

Meet at 9:00 am at the end of Fisher Road (off Hess Road).

From there, we will walk the trail to Coats Marsh and then loop back along the stump trail. We highly recommend you wear waterproof footwear.

Coats Marsh contains environmentally sensitive wetlands along with Douglas fir forest. Photo opportunities that morning might include marshland plants, birds, trees, autumn colours and whatever other nature scenes catch your eye.

After the walkabout there will be an option to meet for coffee/lunch at the Golf Club.

As always, this is a weather-dependent event. You’re welcome to simply show up, but it’s much better if you can let us know ahead of time if you plan to attend, in case of any more last-minute changes – though hopefully no more “atmospheric rivers” are in the forecast for the new date.
