“Domain of the Great Bear” by Laurie MacBride, one of the new photos currently on exhibit.

A lifelong boater, Laurie has spent decades exploring the islands, inlets, shorelines and passages that make up the BC coast, sometimes venturing north to BC’s Central and North Coast – the area now being called the Great Bear Sea. This vast, remote and largely wilderness area encompasses the marine waters from northern Vancouver Island all the way up to the Alaskan border.

This exhibit includes 16 new photos which Laurie has printed for the first time, taken during her most recent trip to the Great Bear Sea in 2022. As well, 10 of her prints from earlier trips are on display in the hallway.

The show runs until April 25, downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Centre, open Monday to Friday.

Making Monochrome Magic – March 6

With special guest presenter, Lee Nordbye

At our March 6 Club meeting, Lee Nordbye will be presenting a talk entitled “Making Monochrome Magic”.

Lee will focus on the art of creating bold black and white imagery by listening to your heart and gut. He’ll present his process, from inspiration to printing, saying that for him, fieldwork and editing are a 50/50 partnership in creating a monochrome work of art. He’ll devote time to walking us through what he looks for in the field and, in some detail, his editing process. He’ll also discuss how to prepare your images for printing, and the critical decisions you need to make before the image comes off the printer.

Lee is an award-winning landscape photographer, speaker, and teacher based in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. He is known for a bold style that highlights the intimate details and nuances of the natural world. A fine art photographer with an adventurous spirit, Lee enjoys spending time outdoors and immersing himself in his subject. A new exhibit of 19 framed prints by wildlife photographer, Linda Blokhuisen, has just opened downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Centre.

In Linda’s own words, “I hope you enjoy a glimpse into my adventure in Toba Inlet. It’s such a beautiful area of our British Columbia coast. Visiting during the salmon run pretty well ensures a grizzly bear experience.”

Linda’s show also includes two photos of whales, taken from Orlebar Point on Gabriola Island, along with two raptors (a snowy owl and an eagle)

Be sure to catch this beautiful exhibit of wildlife images, on display until January 19, 2024.
