Postcards From the Heart: A Journey in West Africa – on now until Aug. 1

As an ongoing project, Gabriola Photography Club curates the art display space downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Clinic on Church Street, Gabriola Island. Club members take turns having solo exhibitions or taking part in group exhibitions.

Gabriola Photos Club member Steve Struthers’ fascinating new chapter in his “Postcards from the Heart” series is now on, this time with the focus on West Africa. In Steve’s own words:

“The photographs in this show offer a glimpse of a part of Africa that provides astounding scenery and a kaleidoscope of peoples, with crowded markets and almost empty deserts, bad roads and great rewards at the end of long, bumpy rides.

Join me on a trip from the Sahara of southern Morocco, through Western Sahara (administered by Morocco but yearning to be independent), the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Senegal, and seldom-visited Guinea Bissau and its offshore islands known as the Bijagos Archipelago. I hope these images allow you to feel some of the excitement and wonder I experienced during my visit to these places.

Enjoy the photos, enjoy the journey.“

Stalking Shadows & Stealing Light – on now until June 13

Well bitten by the Photography bug at an early age, it has really only been with the advancement of DSLR cameras that the bug has ‘developed’ a life of its own under Sher Falls’ pseudonym ‘dragonflydreams88’.

In today’s digital domain, much of Sher’s work evolves as she applies new layers, textures, treatments, and ideas until she is satisfied the artistic metamorphosis is complete.

“Stalking shadows & stealing light at every possible opportunity with my camera, I’ve become keenly aware of the beauty that surrounds me…I love experimenting with different techniques, transforming those captures into a work of ‘heart’. The creative possibilities are endless…my passion, obsession, addiction…I look forward to the possibility of sharing my vision and interpretation of the world through my lens…

Images from the Great Bear Sea – on now until April 25

A ridge of green,, heavily forested mountain peaks with clouds enshrouding their tops, seen from the sea. — “Domain of the Great Bear” by Laurie MacBride, one of the new photos currently on exhibit.

A lifelong boater, Laurie has spent decades exploring the islands, inlets, shorelines and passages that make up the BC coast, sometimes venturing north to BC’s Central and North Coast – the area now being called the Great Bear Sea. This vast, remote and largely wilderness area encompasses the marine waters from northern Vancouver Island all the way up to the Alaskan border.

This exhibit includes 16 new photos which Laurie has printed for the first time, taken during her most recent trip to the Great Bear Sea in 2022. As well, 10 of her prints from earlier trips are on display in the hallway.

The show runs until April 25, downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Centre, open Monday to Friday.

Fall Photo Show Roundup

Gabriola Photography Club’s Fall 2023 Photo Show was a great success, with good participation from Club members, a steady stream of people attending throughout the afternoon, and plenty of positive feedback. Thanks to everyone who showed prints, cards etc., contributed auction items and other donations, helped on show day or in any other way to make this an excellent Club event – and a big thank you to all of the Gabriola public who attended.
